Favorite Things: August 5th

Oh Wonderful Favorite Things

Before we dive into favorite things this week, let me make one thing clear. The above picture is not from this week. Would you like a current update of the weather in SF? Think cold, grey and foggy. It was miserable. To cheer things up a bit, here were the things that I really crushed on this week.

This KQED interview with Aminatou Sowone of my favorite podcasters (from Call Your Girlfriend) and all around smart/funny/woke lady. Best quote: “I’m the girlfriend Drake fights with in “Child’s Play,” the one that takes his Bugatti to go buy tampons at CVS. God bless that woman wherever she is.”

Who What Wear’s floral print bomber from their fall collection at Target. A lot of my coworkers grabbed one from my place of work, but I missed out. Big time.

Stranger Things. I mean, who is not watching it right now? As of publication, I am only on episode three, but once I am done, I’m going to check out this list of books that The Verge rounded up.

If you ever feel a little low, see this tweet. It makes me laugh out loud every time. I’m 12.

Wednesday Wants: August Edition

Oh Wonderful Wednesday Wants: August

When anybody asks me, “What’s new?” I really and truly never have anything good to say. Like, do I want to brag about how many Pokémon I’ve managed to catch today while riding the bus? Do people want to know that I know all the words to “Childs Play” by Drake? Instead, my readers, I’d rather talk about the things I’m craving this month. Here are my August favorites from top to bottom and from left to right. Now I must go to read the Reddit threads and teach myself more Pokémon strategies.

Cute Shop: Only Child, Berkeley

Raise your hand if you’ve taught yourself a new skill, then launched a business within a year. Any takers? Haley Tucker of Only Child can raise her hand (seriously high) on that one. Tucker, a San Diego native and Bay Area transplant, started Only Child in November of last year when she was still working at a San Francisco art gallery and making clothes on the side. Her minimalist, do-it-all pieces became so popular that she went off on her own to focus on Only Child seven days a week. Literally, when I met her she had just taken her first day off since she’s started.

Only Child was born out of her desire to create high-quality pieces that are ethically made (everything’s handmade in her Berkeley studio) and serve as those dependable, go-to workhorses of your wardrobe. As a firm believer that your outfits influence how you feel, Tucker set out to create elevated basics that weren’t boring. The women who wear her clothing are the ones who are always on the hunt for minimalist, easy-to-wear and versatile pieces that can be dressed-up or down and worn all around town. As Tucker put it, “can she look cool and still do a million things?”.

Most of the silhouettes that make up Only Child’s collection are a little bit boxy, but come in the softest colors and fabrics that I’ve ever seen. Expect ultra-layerable kimonos, easy tunics that pair perfectly with your blackest jeans or your most distressed pair of skinnies, and tunic dresses that need just a stacked heel and a bangle to complete the “look.”

Even though Only Child initially started as a venture to fill her own closet with pieces that she couldn’t find in stores, Tucker’s found this incredible niche when it comes to designing and marketing her clothing. With one hand on the ‘gram (Instagram, that is) and a serious hankering towards thinking outside the box, Tucker partners with well-known style bloggers like Style Bee and Cali Vintage to co-design limited edition Only Child pieces.

Even though it’s barely been a year since Only Child has sprouted, Tucker’s thinking big when it comes to her small studio in Berkeley. She’s already done West Coast Craft, fostered perfect partnerships with style mavens and already has her sights set on finding a bigger studio (eventually) and continuing to grow the line. This fall, expect to see deep hues of purple, grey and black—all in the silkiest and smoothest fabrications that you’ll ever lay your paws on.

‘In Common’ by Alicia KeysOkay, I know that I’m late to the music game on this one by listening to the new single by Alicia Keys. Serene, calming and catchy is how I describe it and you can bet that I’ll be listening to it all week. Plus, read this piece that Keys wrote for Lenny.

New month, new me. Just kidding, same old me with some new cravings that I’ll lust over for the entire month and twiddle my thumbs over my laptop debating on whether to spring for them or not.
